Antonio Russo's dairy free iced desserts

Antonio Russo make three dairy and lactose free iced desserts with no gluten containing ingredients, using soya from ethical sources, and no genetically modified ingredients. They are also Halal, Kosher and vegetarian. The other ingredients – chocolate, coffee & vanilla – are all fairtrade – and the palm kernel oil is responsibly sourced under the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

So how do they taste? The texture of all three is very creamy and smooth, and tastes quite rich although with a vegetable base they are not too rich. This texture comes from the hydrogenation of the palm oil which mimics the dairy cream in ice creams. Antonio Russo, well aware that there are already 'healthy' ice cream alternatives, have set out to create a dairy free iced dessert that tastes as creamy as ice cream rather than focusing too heavily on it 'healthiness'. After all, ice cream is meant to be an indulgence product!

The Vanillato – Madagascan vanilla bean has an excellent vanilla flavour, very pleasant indeed. It is easy to scoop straight out of the freezer, is a little darker in colour than your average vanilla ice cream, and has the lovely black specks of vanilla seeds throughout. It is not too sweet and would be good on its own, in a cone or as an accompaniment to a chocolate brownie or sticky toffee pudding... The Chocolato – Belgian dark chocolate is relatively pale, with an almost ‘dairy’ chocolate flavour with tasty chocolate flakes. Just the tiniest hint of orange brings a touch of zestiness and class, but doesn't overpower - in fact if your tastebuds were not on alert you might not notice it! The Caribbato – Jamaican blue mountain coffee is very pleasant, but quite mild – could maybe do with more of a coffee kick. The texture is slightly grainy from the coffee grounds which is delicious.
