FEEL FREE for Gluten Free's frozen fish range

FEEL FREE For Gluten Free (who has recently bought a factory) has added three products to its frozen range, all free from gluten, wheat, dairy, egg and soya: breaded cod and hake fillets, and breaded fish nuggets. The new breaded fish range is made from 100% fish fillet and coated in a maize crumb. In terms of allergens, these are free from four of the 14 major allergens: wheat, egg, milk and soya, and they are also free from gluten. FEEL FREE's packaging has a traceability paragraph telling you the Latin name of the fish you're eating, as well as where and how it was caught, which is pretty amazing information to have. All three products carry the Marine Stewardship Council's certified sustainable seafood logo, meaning they are from sustainable fisheries.

The cooking instructions are fine though we found they could all do with an extra five minutes or so in the oven - their cooking instructions are guidelines (as stated on pack), so be vigilant about undercooking. Overall, these are really good no frills freefrom alternatives to store cupboard (freezer) suppers, easy and quick to prepare. Just whip up some steamed greens and potatoes to accompany.

FEEL FREE breaded cod - cod is a delectable fish that has a very distinctive flavour and a sticky succulence, qualities that make it easy to eat and have got it on and off the endangered species lists. This product is a pure cod fillet, very tasty and the crumb stays together well and retains its crispness. A really good fish and chips-style fillet.

Ingredients:
Cod fillet (approx. 65%), maize, sunflower oil, maize flour, rice flour, modified starch (maize), maize starch, salt.
Allergens in the ingredients are shown in bold.

Allergy Advice: Gluten Free, Wheat Free & Dairy Free.

FEEL FREE breaded hake (photo above) - it has to be said that hake is less flavoursome than cod, however this is a fine, firm fish fillet, the crumb behaves as it ought to and you'd be very hard pressed to tell this was a gluten free-coating. This species, Merluccius capensis, is on the MCS fish to eat list.

Ingredients:
Hake fillet (approx.. 65%, maize, sunflower oil, maize flour, rice flour, modified starch (maize), maize starch, salt.

Allergy Advice: Gluten Free, Wheat Free & Dairy Free.

FEEL FREE fish nuggets - from our experience with the FreeFrom Food Awards children's category, we understand that children with allergies, intolerances and coeliac disease like very much to be able to offer food that their friends would NOT be able to tell was 'freefrom'. These nuggets certainly fit the bill - squares of plain white fish fillet coated in crumb that can be smothered in ketchup and wolfed down with peas and potatoes - before kids rush off. They are not remarkably tasty, similar to a standard fish finger, but they have a nice mild flavour that should appeal to most palates. Each pack contains 10 nuggets. The Alaska pollock used in these nuggets is on the MCS fish to eat list. These nuggets also have a colouring in picture on the packaging, which is rather appealing, and for every pack sold FEEL FREE will make a donation to the Drakenstein lion park in South Africa!

Ingredients:
Alaska Pollock (approx. 60%), maize, maize flour, rice flour, sunflower oil, salt, modified maize starch, maize starch, tapioca.
Allergens in the ingredients are shown in bold.

Allergy Advice: Gluten Free, Wheat Free & Dairy Free.

The three new fish products are available to order from the Feel Free For Gluten Free website. Delivery is available to UK mainland addresses. The fish fillets are priced at £3.99 for a pack of two, while the fish nuggets are £2.49.
